Wonderful Tunes Provided By Friends. Wild Tangents Provided By Me.

Continuing the celebration of Johnny Mercer’s 100th with the 1937 musical “Hollywood Hotel.” The most famous Mercer/Whiting song to come out of this movie was “Hooray for Hollywood.” Today’s song is all about how taking chances in life and in love will generally end up in misery and defeat. It’s the jauntiest doomsday prophecy ever!

Clearly I’m missing some Great Depression Era context on this one. Why Christopher Columbus? He wasn’t actually making time with Queen Isabella was he? What on earth is a jugaroo? Anyway, it’s an extremely fun song even if it does make my puzzler sore!
