Wonderful Tunes Provided By Friends. Wild Tangents Provided By Me.

Here is Bob Hope’s original performance of “Thanks For The Memory.” Not only was this the first time Bob Hope ever sang his signature tune,“Big Broadcast Of 1938” was also his first major motion picture role. Shirley Ross made 30 films between 1933 and 1945. She teamed up with Bob Hope 3 more times including once in a movie named after this very song. I found the whole movie streaming online so I watched it. It’s basically a flimsy plot constructed around several variety acts. Highlights were the comedy of WC Fields and this duet. I think, this is the perfect interpretation of the song.

Like I said, this is a great song but when you hear the original lyrics, it seems an unlikely choice for a comedian’s theme song. I guess it was just the best choice because it was the first choice. Bob frequently modified the lyrics to fit the performing occasion but now that I’ve heard the original, I don’t think he did the song any favors.

As a side note, is it just me or does anyone else think that Shirley is performing this perfect duet in one of the silliest hats in movie history?
