“It Might As Well Be Spring” was written by Rogers and Hammerstein for the movie “State Fair.” Even though Jeanne Crain starred in the film, the original version sung was by Luanne Hogan. It won the Academy Award for best original song. I wonder what it must have been like for Luanne to have turned in an award winning performance she could never take credit for.
Clifford Brown recorded this version on October 14,1954.
The 1964 album “Getz/Gilberto” on which this song appears is credited with starting the bossa nova craze. It featured Stan Getz and João Gilberto and vocals by Astrud Gilberto. It was one of the best selling jazz albums of all time and it won the Grammy for Best Album Of The Year.
If we could ask her, I bet The Beautiful Bulldog would say “It Might As Well Be Spring” is her winter anthem. She’s too short haired for cold weather and too neurotic to wear doggie clothes so she spends a lot of time indoors being very very bored. We try to keep things interesting by smearing peanut butter on toys and tossing the rope bone around our tiny house but she’s really pining for the great outdoors. There’s rabbit poop on the lawn just ripe for sampling and our swing set hasn’t be properly herded in months! Eventually though spring will come and my pup will see her neighborhood again. I just hope by then the cold weather dogs haven’t undone all her fine utility pole scent work. I’d hate to have to see her start from scratch (and sniff).
