Wonderful Tunes Provided By Friends. Wild Tangents Provided By Me.

I decided to post Harry Belafonte today because I mentioned him recently and because he is dreamy. I chose this beautiful duet with Nana Mouskouri because she is a lovely woman with a beautiful voice and she also has a super cool name. Nana is Greek but she’s made albums in more that 10 languages. She is the best selling vocalist of all time worldwide. In 1965 Harry heard Nana’s English language album “Nana Sings” and asked her to go on tour with him. The duo made a live album called “An Evening with Belafonte/Mouskouri” in 1966.

The song “Try To Remember” was written in 1960 for the musical “The Fantasticks.” The music was composed by Harvey Schmidt and the words by Tom Jones (No, not that Tom Jones). The song doesn’t appear on the album but this (possibly) French TV show captures it beautifully.

“The Fantasticks” is apparently the longest running production in history. There’s a documentary about it streaming on Netflix so I’ll be watching that this evening. We haven’t had cable in this house in years so this whole blu-ray on demand thing has turned us both into drooling couch potatoes this weekend. I suppose I should feel worse about that. It’s not good for either of us so I intend to impose strict limits on this! Soon! Later. Just one more musical…
