Former First Lady Betty Ford passed away on July 8. She was 93. Betty was a prominent figure in the women’s movement in the 1970’s and a strong supporter of the Equal Rights Amendment. In 1977 President Carter appointed her to the Commission on the Observance of International Women’s Year. Her public struggles with breast cancer and addiction raised awareness and inspired many to seek life saving treatment. She established the Betty Ford Center for addiction and recovery in 1982 and served as Chairman Of The Board until 2005 when her daughter took over. One interesting fact about Betty Ford that I’d never heard before is that she studied dance under Martha Graham after she graduated high school. Unfortunately, I was unable to find any clips of Betty dancing, but here’s a clip of Martha Graham dancing “Lamentation” which seems to appropriately express the sentiment.
RIP Mrs. Ford.
